Comune di Riolo Terme

City of Waters known since Roman times for their precious therapeutic properties

Situated in the valley of the Senio River, in a pleasant hilly zone upstream of Via Emilia, Riolo Terme is an enchanting resort town that counts among its main attractions a rich historic and environmental patrimony and, of course, the waters of the Terme di Riolo hot springs.
Not by chance is this suggestive town often referred to as the “City of Waters”, which have been known since Roman times for their precious therapeutic properties.

The lush panoramas that frame this resort are worthy of the beauty of the famous Rocca Sforzesca. This superb example of fourteenth-century military fortification evokes distant atmospheres linked to times when the legendary Caterina Sforza lived there.

The fine food and wine patrimony is also rich, featuring the outstanding Romagna D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. wines and the Romagna IGP shallot.
But Riolo is not your typical spa resort.

Its ancient Rocca Sforzesca – a magnificent example of a fourteenth-century military fortress – grants this small town a unique and timeless atmosphere that makes it unforgettable.
Admirably preserved, today the Rocca is a venue for shows, concerts, festivities, and gourmet initiatives and the Museum of the Landscape of Faenza’s Apennines.

The tourist attractions of this town are rounded out by the Golf Club La
Torre with 18 holes stretching out over 200 hectares and the Acqualand Water Park with its long slides that from the hill dive into a large circular swimming pool.

For lovers of nature and the outdoors, a visit to the regional park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola will be a surprise.
Here nature, with contrasts of forms and colours, creates enchanting and spectacular scenery.

ROCCA AND MUSEUM OF THE LANDSCAPE OF FAENZA’S APENNINES
Piazza Mazzanti +39 0546.71025
Constructed in 1388 by the Bolognese to house more than 300 soldiers, it was later reinforced by Caterina Sforza towards the end of the XV century. Today it houses the Museum of the Landscape of Faenza’s Apennines.

PARK BELOW THE WALLS
A “museum park” was opened below the ancient walls of Riolo to exhibit the bronze sculptures by Giovanni Bertozzi inspired by the illustrations in Leonida Costa’s book entitled Le 127 Giornate di Riolo.

CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
Corso Matteotti, 63
This Parish Church was erected in 1960 and still maintains the decorations of the ancient Church of St. John the Baptist (1496), which today has been deconsecrated. The new building houses numerous seventeenth-century paintings and a ceramic tile panel (10 m x 10 m) by the Riolo-born artist Sante Ghinassi, depicting the Crucifixion.

REGIONAL PARK OF THE VENA DEL GESSO ROMAGNOLA
The Park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola (6,000 hectares) protects one of the most interesting sites of the Apennines. The Vena stretches for more than 20 km from the area of Imola to Brisighella and manifests spectacular crags of chalk facing south, like the Riva di San Biagio and the majestic Monte Mauro (517 m) and a vast system of grottoes (which can be visited, Tanaccia and Re Tiberio) and other karstic phenomena.

MOUNT MAURO
Via Monte Mauro
From its summit, on a clear day, it is possible to see the sea and the Alpine foothills.
On the mountain there is only a few minor traces of the ancient castle. Recently the church of Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption) in Tiberiaci has been renovated and continues to dominate the valley of the Sintria river.

GROTTO OF KING TIBERIUS
Hamlet of Borgo Rivola
The Vena del Gesso is a geological formation characterised by karstic phenomena. Among the many grottoes of speleological interest, the one dubbed Re Tiberio is particularly fascinating. Traces of human presence dating to prehistoric times have been found along its length of 306 metres. The Vena del Gesso today is a protected area and part of a Regional Park, also for the importance of the flora and fauna found there.

TERME DI RIOLO AND HOT SPRINGS PARK
Via Firenze, 15
Immersed in the gentle hillsides of Romagna and enhanced by 12 hectares of centuries-old park, the Terme di Riolo (open from March to November) hold precious natural treasures; the excellent curative waters Vittoria, Breta and Margherita and the fine spring mud volcanoes of Bergullo (the only spring in the Region).
In the vast range of wellness services, the splendid spa pool is truly outstanding: sodiobromidiodic, chlorine-free waters at 32°, equipped with more than 40 whirlpools, laminar jets, benches and water fitness equipment.
