Consorzio Vini di Romagna

The Consorzio Vini di Romagna has always worked to support the quality of Romagna wines, the balance of prices and the promotion of the product and its territory

The Consorzio Vini di Romagna (Romagna Wine Consortium) was born in 1962 when in Faenza the strongest champions of Romagnolo wines found themselves seated around a table, including Mayor Elio Assirelli and the Town Clerk Alteo Dolcini, who outlined the structure and duties of a “Consortium for the protection of typical Romagnolo wines”; a body that in October of the same year was legally instituted to assume, a few weeks later, the name of Ente Tutela Vini di Romagna (Association for the Protection of Romagnolo Wines). This was the birth of a consortium amongst grape farmers, wine cellars, wine-making companies to address, regulate, and qualify the production of wine in the region of Romagna.

Confirming the contradictions and originality typical of the thought and character of Romagna natives, the image of the Passatore (a ferryman) was selected to represent the brand, a brigante (bandit) and adventurer who during the first half of the 1800s roamed the lands of Romagna. Still today this portrayal distinguishes the bottles of the wine-making companies associated with the Consorzio.

Since then the Consorzio has developed its own activity, expanding the number of member wine-makers and cantinas, becoming a protagonist of the oenological growth of Romagna that has reached excellent qualitative levels over recent years.

And it is precisely the quality of the wines, the quality-price ratio, the promotion of the product and the territory that continue to be the most important objectives for the Consortium’s Board of Directors, in collaboration with a technical Commission and a development and promotion Commission. There is also an intense control of the production, in the vineyards, in the cellars, and on the bottled product.
